The Nomad Residence Permit programme has accepted 686 applicants during its first two years. The average age of holders of the nomad permit is 37, while their average income is €47,000, Minister for the Interior Byron Camilleri revealed in Parliament, in response to a parliamentary question posed by Opposition MP Jerome Caruana Cilia. He added that on average, each holder spends about €3,000 every month they are in Malta.
Minister Camilleri also stated 282 persons were approved as dependent family members in line with the programme’s provisions.
The Nomad Residence Permit was introduced in 2021 in a bid to attract remote workers to Malta. Previously a fringe phenomenon, digital nomadism became more popular during the COVID-19 pandemic when location-independent work became more commonplace.
The programme is open to citizens of countries outside the European Union and Economic Area. Last year, most digital nomads in Malta hailed from the United States and the United Kingdom.
