Former US Secretary of State Colin Powell has died of COVID-19 complications at age 84, his family said in a Facebook post.
Mr Powell passed away on Monday and was fully vaccinated, his family also shared.
He served as Secretary of State under President George W. Bush between 2001 and 2005 and was the first African-American to fulfil the role. He also served as chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff from 1989 to 1993, under Presidents George H.W. Bush and Bill Clinton.
“We have lost a remarkable and loving husband, father, grandfather and a great American”, the family’s statement read.
