beauty salon

The Fashion Association Malta (FAM) expressed its disapproval of the decision taken by the authorities whereby hair, beauty and nail salons will remain closed until 26th April, despite their being constrained to follow the strictest measures.

In a Facebook post on Wednesday, the Association noted that the sector had complied with the many restrictions throughout the pandemic, and was even prior to it one of the sectors that followed hygiene protocols absolutely.

FAM also pointed out that the beauty sector was never mentioned as a possible cause for the spread of the virus.

“The sector was forced to close down in the most crucial period for sales,” it said, noting that certain services cannot be provided in summer.

The Association highlighted the fact the the sector only received the wage supplement, with no other assistance like that given to other industries who also received assistance with other expenses.

This resulted in entrepreneurs often ended up spending their own wage supplement on rent.

“These decisions, taken by the Superintendent of Public Health without consultation with any stakeholders, may result in loss of jobs and business closures,” FAM said.

The Association concluded by calling on the authorities to consult before taking decisions, especially for a sector they have no experience in.

“The fashion industry is in favour of any decision taken to curb the spread of the virus, but with consultation, we would have achieved the same aim without loss of business and jobs.”
