42-year-old French President Emmanuel Macron has tested positive for COVID-19, the French presidency said in a statement.

Mr Macron was tested for the virus after developing symptoms, and will now isolate for seven days.

An official within the French presidency said that Mr Macron is “still in charge” of the running of the country, and will work remotely.

This week, France imposed an overnight curfew to help deal with soaring cases of the virus.

There have been two million confirmed cases in the country since the epidemic began, with more than 59,400 deaths, according to data from Johns Hopkins University.
