Prime Minister Robert Abela has committed to increasing investment in Malta’s energy distribution system from €15 million to €30 million in 2024.
The announcement was made during a meeting with the Maltese Council for Economic and Social Development (MCESD). On 25th July (Tuesday) The Malta Chamber had called for an urgent meeting with MCESD to discuss the current situation if the country following several days of power outages which had severely impacted households and businesses, and after expressing concerns with the manner in which the country was being led.
In his address at the beginning of the MCESD meeting, Dr Abela explained that, on advice of Enemalta technicians, there was a need to complete the establishment of new distribution centres and expansion of others in order to ensure a more robust system.
He also said that the undergoing economic transition must be a major contributor to addressing present and future problems related to climate change.
The Minister for Environment, Energy and Enterprise Miriam Dalli, announced that in the past few months, work has been underway to establish an authority focused on climate change. It will be focused on monitoring the impact of different activities on climate change and present actions to be taken by the country.
