MIA Runway

On Monday (today), Malta International Airport (MIA) revealed that it welcomed 951,861 passengers in July 2024, a figure which it described as “unprecedented.”

This figure represents a 12.2 per cent increase compared to the record passenger volumes handled in 2023.

This also confirms July 2024 as the busiest month in MIA’s history, the first ever month to surpass 900,000 passenger movements.

In addition, this milestone was accompanied by a 14.1 per cent growth in aircraft movements, bringing the total number of flights operated to and from MIA up to 6,054.

Its busiest day of the month fell on Thursday 25th July with 214 arriving and departing flights.

Seat capacity also increased by 11.5 per cent, with 89.7 per cent of all available seats occupied, reflecting the high demand for travel as the summer travel rush set in. In total, July reached a seat capacity of 1.06 million.

As always, Italy remained the top market for MIA, capturing 25.5 per cent of the market share attracting 242,385 passenger movements in total. This was followed by the United Kingdom, France, Germany, and Poland.

On the other hand, Poland was registered as the fastest-growing market at 51.4 per cent.

Overall, year-to-date traffic was registered at 5,017,275. Meanwhile, cargo and mail for the month of July stood at 2,128 tonnes.

Looking ahead, MIA is preparing for even higher passenger volumes as the Santa Maria public holiday weekend edges closer (this week).

The airport anticipates over 33,700 passengers will travel on its busiest days, projected to be the 15th, 22nd and 29th of August.

Therefore, the peak week of travel is expected to be between the 12th and 18th August with an anticipated 216,922 passengers.
