Malta sees 23.4% surge in inbound tourists in first half of 2024

Malta recorded 1,590,867 in inbound tourists during the first six months of 2024 (H1 2024), an increase of 23.4 per cent over the same period in 2023, data published by the National Statistics Office (NSO) on Tuesday (today) revealed.

Total nights spent by inbound tourists rose by 15.7 per cent over H1 2023 figures, surpassing 9.4 million nights.

Total tourist expenditure was estimated at €1.3 billion, 24.5 per cent more than the same period in 2023. There was also an increase in total expenditure per capita, going up from €804 to €812 in H1 2024.

The number of tourists visiting Gozo and Comino, including both same-day and overnight visitors, amounted to 852,089, representing 53.6 per cent of total tourists.

June 2024 results

The results posted in H1 2024 were driven by another year-on-year increase in inbound tourists during June 2024, going up by 19.2 per cent to 350,910.

Out of the figure for June 2024, 325,940 visited Malta for holiday purposes, while 13,333 came for business reasons.

The largest share of inbound tourists were aged between 25 and 44, amounting to 40.6 per cent. This was followed by the 45 to 64 age bracket which represented 26.9 per cent of the month’s total.

British, Italian and French residents made up 46.4 per cent of total inbound tourists for June 2024.

Tourists’ total nights spent in Malta went up by 18.2 per cent when compared to June 2023, surpassing 2.3 million nights. The largest share of guest nights (85.7 per cent) was spent in rented accommodation establishments.

The average length of stay of total inbound tourists stood at 6.6 nights.

Total tourist expenditure came close to €333.7 million, a rise of 16.5 per cent over the same month in 2023. Average expenditure per night was estimated to be €145.

The number of tourists visiting Gozo and Comino, including both same-day and overnight visitors, amounted to 218,004, representing 62.1 per cent of total tourists.
