The Malta Gaming Authority has commended the Malta police force on the prosecution of a man who ultimately pled guilty to, amongst other charges, being involved in the manipulation of a sporting event and the illicit taking of bets.
On 13th January 2021, the Court of Magistrates presided over by Magistrate Charmaine Galea handed a two-year jail term suspended for four years and a €50,000 fine.
The MGA “commends the work done by the Malta Police Force and its dedication in tackling any form of crime related to the manipulation of sports competitions and illegal gambling.
“The Authority continuously assists the Malta Police Force with such investigations and will continue to do so in any future cases to the best of its abilities, in order to uphold the value of sports integrity and to ensure that gambling is free from crime.!
It called on the public to reach out with any information related to suspicious betting activity, match-fixing, or any other related illegalities in sports and/or illegal gambling to come forward and report to the Sports Integrity Unit on sportsintegrity.mga@mga.org.mt and the Investigations Unit on investigations.mga@mga.org.mt.
The MGA has, in recent years, stepped up its effort son suspicious betting and match-fixing, signing several data-sharing agreements with other jurisdiction and recently introduced new regulations on the mandatory reporting of suspicious betting.
