Nike has launched a new circular consumer offering, ‘Nike Refurbished’, which will see returned shoes cleaned up and put back on sale for a reduced price.
The programme will initially be launched at 15 locations in the US, though the company says it does plan to expand the scheme across the US and internationally.
Explaining how it will work, Nike says that after a shopper returns an eligible pair of shoes within the company’s 60-day returns window, the foot wear is inspected and refurbished by hand, before being given a condition grade.
Once the shoes arrive back in Nike stores, the price is based on the footwear type and its condition grade.
Messaging on the boxes will inform the user what kind of shoes are inside, their condition grade, and more, Nike says.
After purchasing Nike Refurbished footwear, shoppers will still be able to return the product in the normal 60-day return window.
The secondhand clothing market has seen rapid growth in recent years, as sustainably sourced products become more and more trendy.
Aside from the aforementioned refurnished footwear programme, Nike has a number of initiatives working towards the company’s “journey towards zero carbon and zero waste”.
As part of this, Nike says it will power owned-and-operated facilities with 100 per cent renewable energy by 2025 and reduce carbon emissions across its global supply chain by 30 per cent by 2030.
