Superintendent of Public Health, Charmaine Gauci, when asked by various journalists during her weekly media briefing about when Malta can expect its rules on mask use to be relaxed, repeatedly said that authorities are continuing to observe the evidence at hand, without sharing any concrete projections.

“We are observing what is happening elsewhere, and the impact of vaccinations on the spread of the virus. When the time is right, we will announce the removal of masks accordingly.”

Currently, people in Malta must wear their masks at all times when outside of the home, that includes at work, out in the open, on the beach, on public transport and inside all shops and services. The only exception to be introduced will be mask usage on the beach on 1st June.

“I know a lot of people are talking about masks, but it is important that we use all tools at our disposal that limit the spread of the virus. We have seen the models, and we have seen that masks reduce the spread. So, we need to continue using all tools in our toolbox,” Prof Gauci stressed.

She added that it is imperative for people to continue observing the rules at this crucial time. As of Monday, all those aged 16 and over will be permitted to register for a COVID-19 vaccine appointment.
